Yuccas of the Sothwest, U. S. 1:24. 1938.



Type: Limestone hills, Carneros Pass, Carneros, NE Mexico, C. G. Pringle 3912, May 11, 1891 (MO 135656, 135657, 140116 Syntypes). (McKelvey defined the syntypes with reference to the prologue of Trelase´s original description).

Description


Arborescent, 2-5 m (8 m) tall, soltary, to 40 cm diameter at the base, unbranched, raely 2 or more branches of variying lengths, the old dry leaves remain attached to the stem all the way down to the ground. Rosettes to 2-5 m acoss, leaves stiff, dark ble-green, with twisted, white, marginal fibres, 1-1.4 m long, 10-15 cm wide at the base, around midlength 4-6 cm wide, concavo-convex for the most part, acuminate, terminal spine 1-1.5 cm long.

Inflorescence 1-2 m long, flowers held above the leaves, panicle spherical to ellipsoidal, with 15-40 branches, flowers white to greenish-white, outer perianth segments 6.5-10 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, inner perianth segments 6-9 cm long, pistil 5-7.5 cm long, ovary, 0.5-1.2 cm thick, sytle 0.8 cm long. Fruit with 3 locules, each containing two rows of seeds, 5-10 cm long, 4 cm wide, oblong to ovate, red-brwon to nearly black, seeds 0.6 cm long, 0.5 cm wide, 0.2 cm thick, surface finely sculptured, dull black.

Flowering period: March to April, depending on altitude. Seeds ripen in 6-8 weeks.
